PresentaTION

The Black Panther Movement, which was started by Huey P. Newton and Bobby Seale, advocated against police brutality and supported Black rights. Characterized for their determination to fight against oppression and end systematic racism, The Black Panthers were involved in both peaceful protests and more direct/violent methods towards their pursuit of equality for African Americans.

Causes

The Black Panther Movement was founded on the principles of equality for African Americans. The purpose was to eliminate the systematic racism and police brutality against black people, however there was an initial turning point that led to the formation of the Black Panthers. Tensions increased after the assassination of Malcom X, a black nationalist who advocated for Black empowerment.

Federal Response

  • The government viewed the movement as an extremist organization that was a threat to national security
  • Under the program COINTELPRO, the FBI attempted to neutralize the Black Panthers by creating chaos within the group
  • There were a number of clashes between police and Black Panther activists. Many members were arrested and charged with crimes on accounts of violence and manslaughter.
