Mini Lab
Ice Cream in a Bag
Before you start, make sure you have adult supervision!
Materials
1 cup of half-and-half or whole milk 2 tablespoons of sugar 1/2 teaspoon of vanilla extract 1/2 cup of rock salt Ice cubes 2 resealable plastic bags
Before You Begin
Looking at the materials list, make a prediction. If you combine the materials on your materials list, do you think a chemical or physical reaction will happen? Why?
Let's Begin!
In a small bowl, mix together the half-and-half or whole milk, sugar, and vanilla extract until the sugar dissolves.
Pour the mixture into the quart-sized plastic bag and seal it tightly, removing as much air as possible.
Fill the gallon-sized plastic bag halfway with ice cubes and then add the salt on top of the ice.
Place the sealed quart-sized bag with the milk mixture into the gallon-sized bag with the ice and salt.
Seal the gallon-sized bag, again removing as much air as possible.
Lab Continued
Shake the bag for 5-10 minutes, or until the milk mixture turns into ice cream.
Remove the quart-sized bag from the gallon-sized bag, wipe it off with a towel, and enjoy your homemade ice cream!
Talk with the adult that is helping you about what changes happened.
Think of other examples of chemical changes you know.
Was it a physical or chemical change?
