The Taj Mahal

Why it was built?

It was built in honor of the wife of Shah Jahan, Mumtaz Mahal.

Architecture

The Taj Mahal is a temple made of white marble and precious stones, like sapphire, ametyst, quartz and some diamonds.

The central chamber is the burial chamber that houses the cenopaths of Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan. We say cenopaths because the bodies aren´t really there, but in a burial in a lower area, in a simple crypt. The toms face south, overlooking the gardens.

Curiosities of the Taj Majal

-In 2007 it was proclaimed one of the seven wonders of the world.

-In 1983 it was a World Heritage Site.

-The Taj Mahal is visited by 8 million people in a year.
