The Middle way

Elizabeth's attitude was defined as "the middle way" since it resembled her father's. As long as parties were loyal to the state, her policy was to avoid driving them to persecution

ith the act of supremacy (1559) she re-established the Anglican church, reinstated the protestant clergy and declared herself supreme administrator. The act of uniformity (1559) required the clergy to use the English prayer book, modified to incorporate also the breviary, the missal and the ritual.

She also never got married because she wanted to protect her country from foreign rules

She never got married since she never wanted to upset any citizen either protestant or catholic

She had several suitors, including King Philip II of Spain, but marriage at the time meant political affiliation

The virgin queen

During her absence, the Scottish people had turned protestants as a result of John Knox's preaching, and Mary, a catholic, was obliged to abdicate. She escaped to England looking for Elizabeth's protection. But when Mary was accused to assassinate Elizabeth and guilty of treason, Elizabeth ordered her execution in 1587. One direct outcome of the execution was the war with Spain and the launching of the "armada" in 1588.

Mary Stuart

Mary Tudor was the only daughter of James V of Scotland and Mary of Guise. She had spent the majority of her youth in France, where she had married the dauphine. When he died in 1560, Mary was forced to return to Scotland to be crowned queen.

War with Spain

It was defeated thanks to a combination of adverse weather and skilled english seamen, led by Francis Drake

The spanish Armada, ordered by Philip II, was defeated in 1588

This charter marked the beginning of imperial extension of the 17th and 18th centuries and established British control over the Indian subcontinent

Trade and empire

In 1585 Sir Walter Raleigh founded a colony and named it "Virginia" in honor of the queen. In 1600 Elizabeth signed a charter for the British East India Company
