What is tone?

What is tone?

Intonation is the rise and fall of voice, sound, or tone.

Tone is "Mood".

Intonation defines intention and how we speak. For e.g., it can convey a meaning, express emotions, highlight/emphasize, add clarity etc.

Tone can be heard or seen when something is said. Emotions influence tone.For e.g. - a happy or an upset voice.

Different types of intonations are: rise, fall, a combination of rise-fall, flat, finality/non-finality, etc.

It can be happy, sad, cheery, angry, frustrated, indifferent, upset, etc.

How to decide the tone of the presentation?

Based on the audience, context/topic, purpose of your message, setup/ambience, use one or more of these suggested tones:

Encouraging

Optimistic

Formal

Curious

Friendly

Informal

Assertive

Cooperative

Humor

Surprised

Factual

Conversational

Suspenseful

Questioning

Joyful

Here are some things you can do to bring variety to flat delivery:

Use excited voice to create buzz/anticipation.

Take a pause after saying something significant or impactful.

Speak at a moderate/slow speed for an insights/gravitas.

Use the rise and fall of voice to add variation, make final statements.
