Before starting your visit to the HEQED home, take your time to define your positionality (exploring intersectionality) and your capabilities and to reflect about how this could shape your learning experience and the room you will have later for action on health equity.
Positionality
Intersectional
Capabilities
Postisionality: Any information we can discover in the HEQED home is always framed within the learner’s past knowledge and beliefs. It is also shaped by the reader’s positionality. Positionality is the notion that personal values, views, and location in time and space influence how one understands the world. Intersectionality: The concept of intersectionality describes our positionality made of simultaneous and multiple dimensions. The feeling of belonging to diverse groups according to our gender preferences, our age, living with a disability, and other characteristics that stratify health opportunities and outcomes (remember the acronym PROGRESS+). All those factors shape our memories, identities we activate, interpretations and actions.
By the way, applying intersectionality lens to health equity would be a useful exercise during your staying in the HEQED home as well as in your professional practice (more here). Capabilities: Positionality is not static, but it depends on our capabilities. Sen Amartya calls this notion capabilities. Capabilities are the real freedoms that people have to achieve their potential doings and beings. In the reality, this space could be restrained by lack of power, limited agency, and barriers of any kind.

How and why to use this site as a trainer/teacher?
This site contains several perspectives or 'lenses' to look at health equity. It also provides several stories in which health equity issues are at stake. Each story comes with probing questions to analyse and reflect upon these stories. You can use this material to teach students about health equity. The aim is to become more sensitive to health equity in everyday practice and reflect upon and discuss possible actions. You can also apply the lenses to your local context, blending them with your lesson as you see fit. Feel free to take some inspiration from these short examples.

Example of how to use the HEQED cases in your teaching.
Start Blend (During lecture / end of another class / video message / ..)
- Introduction to Health Inequity (Brief explanation of what it is)
- Explanation of workshops and learning objectives
- Assign the first homework task to students
Homework:
- Study the lenses
- Apply them to Case X (Choose one of the stories on the HEQED website)
Workshop 1:
- Have groups discuss their own elaborations of the homework assignment
- Provide plenary feedback
- In groups, apply the lenses again to Case Y (Have students choose another story on the HEQED website)
- Assign homework for home
Homework:
- Choose a situation in your own context (Own country, own profession, own practice)
- Apply the lenses to this situation
- Devise solutions that could improve the identified problems in Health Inequity
Workshop 2:
- Discuss each other’s elaborations of the homework assignment in groups
- Ask one or more students to share their elaboration in a short pitch
- Discuss the presented elaborations
- Reflect on what students have learned in the workshops and what they will take away
Example of how to use the HEQED cases.
....
If you work together, this always gives more pleasure and is certainly very educational, and if you are also looking for some structure, you can proceed as follows:
- First of all, you can make agreements: divide the different 'lenses / perspectives', try to divide the relevant ones and delve deeper into them (this can be done individually and as a preparatory assignment).
- Complete this with your own opinion and present it to each other.
- Make sure you get an overview of the different 'stories'.
- Make a choice and go through the story (from left to right and from top to bottom) in a joint session.
- Choose a 'lens/perspective', refresh it briefly and then view the 'story' from that perspective. Let all relevant lenses be discussed in a moment. Discuss this and form your own/joint opinion(s).
- Describe in a reflection what the differences are between your own opinion and the opinion including the lens! (this can also be done individually)
- Try the same with a story from your own environment and/or one of the other stories.
Good luck with these steps and if possible, share your findings with others!
Example of how to use the HEQED cases in your teaching.
Objective: This lesson introduces the five lenses that challenge students’ own views on applying health equity in their practice
Learning goals:
- Students learn the five health equity lenses and values
- Students’ lenses are challenged by discussing the five lenses proposed.
- Students enhance their ability to view professional challenges by using five health equity lenses, exploring diverse perspectives
- Students reflect on possibilities to apply these lenses in their practice and formulate their take-home message.
Homework:
Read the background information on the five lenses and prepare the two cases.
- Alejandra and Maria
- Mercy Ships
Set up of the lesson
Start with a short plenary dialogue on how students have interpreted the lenses. Ensure that each lens is addressed shortly: human rights, ontological security, social justice, participation and planetary well-being (15 min).
Continue with small group dialogues.
- The five lenses and values are distributed among the students. Each homogenous group per lens gets some time to clarify their lens (15 min).
- Then, one or two real-life cases are proposed in which health equity is challenged (Alejandra and Maria or Mersey ships. Participants form heterogeneous groups in which the five lenses are represented. They discuss one of the cases from a professional perspective based on their assigned lens (30 min).
- Next, each group will provide plenary feedback on the main challenges in their subgroup discussions (15 min).
- In the wrap-up, participants will formulate their own take-home message on applying the lenses and the tools (15 min).

Exploring on your own: This site is designed to support as many different ways of learning as possible. If you come to this site as a curious 'learner' and want to explore, you can start with 'lenses and perspectives' to challenge you how to view 'stories'! Then, with a chosen lens as a starting point, you can see how it influences one of the 'stories', what that would mean in your environment and how possible improvement steps can be taken in that specific enviroment If possible share this with others!
