Back
John Proctor is an honest, upright, and blunt-spoken man. He is a good man, but one with a secret, fatal flaw. His lust for Abigail Williams led to their affair (which occurs before the play begins), and created Abigail’s jealousy of his wife, Elizabeth, which sets the entire witch hysteria in motion. Once the trials begin, Proctor realizes that he can stop Abigail’s rampage through Salem but only if he confesses to his adultery.
Back
Physically, Elizabeth Proctor is described as a "grave" and "cold" woman, with a pale complexion and a thin figure. She has a serious demeanor, and her voice is often described as "faint." She is portrayed as being somewhat reserved and distant and is not very expressive of her emotions. However, Elizabeth is also shown to be a woman of strong moral conviction and inner strength. She is deeply religious and takes her faith seriously, and is highly respected in the community. She is also a loving wife and mother and is fiercely loyal to her husband despite his infidelity. Throughout the play, Elizabeth struggles to come to terms with the accusations of witchcraft that are leveled against her and her husband. She is torn between her desire to protect her family and her belief in telling the truth.
Back
Abigail Williams tells lies, manipulates her friends and the entire town, and eventually sends nineteen innocent people to their deaths. Throughout the hysteria, Abigail’s motivations never seem more complex than simple jealousy and a desire to have revenge on Elizabeth Proctor.
Back
Mary Warren is described as being "a subservient, naive, lonely girl." She is portrayed as being very timid and easily intimidated by the other girls in the play. Her voice is often described as "weak" and "faint."Mary's character is shown to be conflicted throughout the play, torn between her loyalty to the other girls and her guilt about lying to condemn innocent people. She is also very impressionable, easily swayed by the opinions of those around her.
Back
Governor Danforth represents rigidity and an over-adherence to the law in The Crucible. Danforth is clearly an intelligent man, highly respected and successful. He arrives in Salem to oversee the trials of the accused witches with a serene sense of his own ability to judge fairly. The chaos of the trial doesn’t affect his own belief that he is the best judge.
Back
Reverand Hale is the intellectual but naïve witch hunter. AKA the exorcist. He is called upon to treat Betty Parris. This is a beloved errand for him because he has immense pride in his craft. However, he is forced into the witch trials, and over time he experiences a transformation and begins to resent his decision but it becomes too late.
Back
Reverand Sameul Parris is the minister of the Puritan church in Salem and is the father of Betty Parris, one of the girls who accuses others of witchcraft.Parris is portrayed as being somewhat paranoid and insecure and is obsessed with maintaining his authority and reputation in the community. Parris is a deeply religious man, but his motivations are often driven more by his desire for power and control.
Back
Betty Parris is the daughter of Reverend Samuel Parris. She is easily influenced by the other girls and is quick to accuse others of witchcraft in order to protect herself. She pretends to be in a sleep-like state after she was found in the woods with others. Being one of the first girls to cry witchcraft lead to a chain reaction of hysteria and fear throughout the community and contribute to the tragic events that unfold.
Back
Rebecca Nurse is described as a kind and gentle old woman. Rebecca Nurse is also portrayed as a deeply religious and moral person, with a strong faith in God and a commitment to living a virtuous life. She is known in the community for her piety, wisdom, and kindness, and is widely respected and admired.
Back
Francis Nurse is a wealthy and influential man in Salem. Nurse is well respected by most people in Salem, but he is an enemy of Thomas Putnam and his wife.
Back
Giles Corey is fiercely independent and resents any attempt by others to control him or limit his freedom. He is also deeply concerned about justice and fairness, and he becomes one of the few people in Salem who openly speaks out against the witch trials and the corruption of the court. Despite his gruff exterior, Giles Corey is a man of great courage and loyalty. He refuses to betray his friends, even when it means putting himself in danger, and he ultimately sacrifices his own life by being pressed to death rather than compromise his principles.
Back
Martha Corey is a kind and gentle woman. She is very religious, but her reading habits lead to her arrest and conviction for witchcraft. When she is accused of witchcraft, many people in the community are quick to believe the worst about her. Despite the injustice of her situation, Martha Corey remains steadfast in her faith and her belief in the goodness of humanity. She refuses to confess to crimes she did not commit.
Back
Ann is Thomas Putnam’s wife. Ann Putnam has given birth to eight children, but only Ruth Putnam survived. The other seven died before they were a day old, and Ann is convinced that they were murdered by supernatural means.
Back
Thomas Putnum is a wealthy, influential citizen of Salem, Putnam holds a grudge against Francis Nurse for preventing Putnam’s brother-in-law from being elected to the office of minister. He uses the witch trials to increase his own wealth by accusing people of witchcraft and then buying up their land.
Back
This is Ruth Putnam. She is the Putnams’ only surviving child out of eight. Like Betty Parris, Ruth falls into a strange sleep-like state after Reverend Parris catches her and the other girls dancing in the woods at night.
Back
Tituba is an enslave woman from Barbados who is owned by Reverend Parris, the minister of Salem. She is shown to be fearful and submissive, due in part to her low social status as a slave. In the play, Tituba is the first person accused of practicing witchcraft because she was seen "practicing voodoo" in the woods with some of the young girls. She is pressured into confessing and falsely accuses several other women in the community. Despite her false confession, her role in the witch trials shows importance because her low social status and her lack of power in the community make her vulnerable to the accusations of others.
