1809 Edgar Poe Edgar Poe was born on January 19, 1809 in Boston, USA. His parents were Elizabeth Arnold Poe and Charles Hopkins David Poe.

1815 to 1820 His adoptive family He was adopted by a rich family from Richmond, Virginia, Frances and John Allan. The family moved to England for five years, from 1815 to 1820, and Edgar went to one of the best schools in the country.

1827 Left his home John Allan, his adoptive father with whom he didn´t have a good relationship, refused to pay for his university education because Edgar spent too much money. This hurt Poe a lot, so he decided to left his home for ever, it´s said that at that time he had a good relationship with his aunt Maria Poe Clemm, so Edgar stayed at his aunt's house.

1835 Marriage When Edgar was twenty-six he married his cousin Virginia Clemm, who was 14 at the time. Their married life was difficult, Poe worked hard but he didn´t earn much money and never stayed long in one job. He was a nervous man and drank a lot, and he believed that he was mad.

1845 The Raven - Tales "The Raven" is a narrative poem, first published in January 1845. It tells of a sad lover who receives a mysterious visit from a talking raven. The lover, often identified as a student, is mourning the loss of his love, Lenore. It was the most famous novel, bringing him international recognition. Tales is a collection of 25 stories from the literary father of the mysterious and the macabre, also published in 1845.

The end of Poe's life

1849 The end of Poe´s life In September 1849, Edgar disappeared and was later found in a street in Baltimore. He was taken to de hospital, where he died on 7 October of the same year. Poe was buried in Baltimore, next to his wife Virginia
