What is Informative Writing?

  • Writing that presents factual information about a subject.
  • Writing that provides information to the reader!
  • The purpose is to inform, clarify, explain, define, or instruct by giving information, explaining why or how, clarifying a process, or defining a concept.

What is a Sentence Hook?

A hook is an opening statement (which is usually the first sentence) in an essay that attempts to grab the reader's attention so that they want to read on.
-Begin by asking a question or riddle. Eg: What is orange and black, weighs up to 700 pounds and can be heard from two miles away? -Begin with an amazing or surprising fact. Eg: Your fingerprints and a tiger’s stripes have something in common. They are unique. There are no two alike! -Begin with a funny or interesting comment. Eg: The biggest cat in the world is not Grumpy Cat! The world’s biggest cats are tigers!”

What is Topic Sentence?

- A topic sentence tells the readers what the paragraph is about. - It should not describe what you are going to write in the paragraph. - It should be 1-2 sentences long.
Eg: There are many interesting facts about their physical traits, their habitats, their diet and their habits. Eg: In this paragraph, we are going to talk about their physical traits, their habitats, their diet and their habits.

What is Closing Sentence?

-The concluding sentence is the last sentence in a paragraph. Its job is to summarize the main idea of the paragraph. - It should be 1-2 sentences long.
Words that can be used: Therefore, To conclude, In conclusion, Thus, For this reason Eg: To conclude, tigers are not just pretty cats. They are amazing animals.
