Unit 2.1 The World Under Threat

10 global environment issues

1. ENvironmental issues/threats

"Nature once determined how we survive. Now we determine how nature survives."

In this subunit, we face multiple issues on Nature caused by Humanity (+ info). Through the learning of new vocabulary, we reflect the impact of our actions and how they affect the world we live in. Nevertheless, we also comprehend how needful we are for the resourses Nature provides, even though we are demolishing it.

Instead of using renewable energy sources, and keep the promise to cut carbon emissions to net zero by 2060, China seems to have plans to build 18 new coal-fired blast furnaces

It was recently approved one of the largest oil developments on federal land, a decision that came after months of intense lobbying and over objections that the project.

“Fire activity was up significantly in 2020. All types of fires contributed to the increase, including deforestation fires and understory fires, the most environmentally destructive types,” said Douglas Morton.

Now that governments have finally decided to act on climate change, we must avoid situations where leaders can claim that even the weakest policies can avert dangerous consequences,” says coauthor Shaun Lovejoy

PALE BLUE DOT

In this speech, Humanity as a whole is piercieved to be insignificant when compared to the vast universe. Afterall, Earth is just a mote of dust, which by luck is the only one to bear life. That's one of the reasons we should take responsability for it. Everything humanity went through: our history, our religions, our leaders, etc, was on this little planet. Humans are egocentric and delusional, so of course we believe that we have some privilege in the vast Universe.

We should treat the world more kindly and understand that if we don´t save it now, there's no one to do it for us. Humans are the only beings who can make a change and preserve this blue dot, so we must do it. It's the only home we are ever going to experience.

"How long before it's too late?"

Even though the number of endangered species is increasing and there's many extreme weather events ocorring because of the climate change, great world powers seem to be uninterested with it. We should spread awareness and make them understand how their actions affect the world.

THE OCEAN CLEANUP

"Big problems require big solutions." Just like Boyan, we should also play our part to help the planet. We may not have the resources to create a system like him, but we sure must do something. Don't just left things for tomorrow, it might be too late.

This interview is the best example of someone who tried to make a change. Boyan Slat, with the help of crowdfunded money, fund a organisation so big trash collectors could clean the gargabe on the sea.

Unit 2.2: A Global Call

Love song to the earth

1. ENvironmental activists

"The greatest threat to our planet is the belief that someone else will save it."

Since in the last subunit we considered the impacts of our actions on Nature, in this subunit we became aware of what we should and could do to save the world. Perhaps, how to avoid the effects of climate change and what are its consequences, and mostly how to spread awareness and become a activist.

51 Billion to Zero

This excerpt shows us how much our modern lifestyle affects the world. Although this means people's life is getting better, climate change will keep getting worse. Fifty-one billion is how many tons of greenhouse gases are added to the atmosphere, and zero is our goal. To stop this warming, we must invent and deploy the tools we need to avoid catastrophes. "We need to create breakthrough technologies that can take us the rest of the way." Just like Gates pointed out, we need to work on the tools we already have: sun and wind for example, and stop using non-renewable fuels that are harmful to the atmosphere if explored.

Sir David Attenborough

Swedish Activist

English biologist

SINOPSIS: A young activist who started campaigning as a question of moral responsibility. Her organizing strikes inspired a lot of young people.

SINOPSIS: An elder activist, who realised the natural world was in trouble and made a film about the environment, which showed how every issue is intertwined.

For her, the main thing anyone can do is to spread awareness about the crisis we are living in, and, although I agree with it, I think it isn't the only thing we can do. Just like her, the younger generation must do something to change our environmental crisis.

Sir David is one of the few elder people who cares about the environment. He spreads his experience and wisdom to help the youngest activists, showing how this environmental issues didn't started appearing in the last decade.

YOUTH TO POWER

News Article:

The World needs to hear your voice

Just like Jamie said, we should take advantage of our youth to speak the true and make a change, since no one is going to make it for us. With our insight and our elders experience, we can make a positive impact.

Unit 2.3 Playing my part

Before and after the pandemic

1. how to be eco-friendly

"The most environmentally friendly product is the one you didn't buy"

The first step to help the planet, is to learn how to have a eco-friendly lifestyle. We must keep in mind our carbon footprint so we can decrease the greenhouse gases emitted into the atmosphere,Waste less, recycle, and be a counscious consumer to help the planet.

Kitty O'Meara

And the people stayed home

I think this poem is the proof of how humanity is the problem. The planet only started to heal because in this times people had to stay home for their own safety and had to be empathic. However, as soon as it wasn't a obligation anymore, people started to make the same mistakes they did before, once it doesn't affect them directly no more.

A zero-waste life

I felt surprised by how little trash she collected in so many time, and that way the video incentivates peole to recycle and waste less things. However, in my opinion, anyone who doesn't have enough money to have this expensive lifestyle, will find it hard to exhibit the same results she had.

The shopping centre in Sweden where everything is recycled

Consumerism affects even teenagers these days: they become influenced by media and big brands, which most of the times are really expensive and not eco-friendly. Buying in second-hand is giving many products a new life and that way reduce wasting good materials

Unit 2.4: Adds all around

ED'S HEINZ AD

1. Advertising strategies

"People do not buy goods or services. They buy relations, stories, magic."

Advertising is everywhere. In our homes, at the shopping, in internet, movies and even in streets. They have a considerable influence on how we act and what we buy. They appeal you to buy certain things and invite you to spend your money in things you might don't even need. But it isn't all that bad. Sometimes, adds let you stay informed on better products for your house, family, and others.
