  • Refers to the responsible use of technology by anyone who uses computers, the Internet, and digital devices to engage with society on any level.
  • It includes rights but also responsibilities as to the community and to the society.

It happens when it engages students and shows them how to:
  • Connect with one another
  • Empathize with each other
  • Create lasting relationships through digital tools
  • Ensure safety and privacy
  • Respect copyright

And what does it mean bad digital citizenship?

Bad digital citizenship - meaning

It involves:
  • Cyberbullying
  • Irresponsible social media usage
  • A general lack of knowledge about how to safely use the Internet.

What concepts does digital citizenship include?

Competences for democratic culture

The Council of Europe (2022) establishes the Competences for Democratic Culture, which will be the basis for digital citizenship

The European Comission defines 10 digital citizenship domains and divides them in 3 areas.Being online:
  • Access and inclusion
  • Learning and creativity
  • Media and information literacy
Well-being online:
  • Ethics and empathy
  • Health and well-being
  • e-presence and communications
Rights online:
  • Active participation
  • Rights and responsiblities
  • Privacy and security
  • Consumer awareness

Digital citizen - definition

A digital citizen is someone who, through the development of a broad range of competences, is able to actively, positively and responsibly engage in both online and offline communities, whether local, national or global. They can perform a wide range of activities, from creating, consuming, sharing, playing and socialising, to investigating, communicating, learning and working. Competent digital citizens are able to respond to new and everyday challenges related to learning, work, employability, leisure, inclusion and participation in society, respecting human rights and intercultural differences.

Global citizenship

  • The feeling of belonging to a wider community and a common humanity, promoting a global vision that connects national to international and local to global (glocal).
  • It is a way of understanding, acting and relating to others and to the environment, based on universal values, respecting diversity and pluralism.

  • 21st century citizens have a global responsibility, as their actions can have repercussions on communities at local, national or international level.
  • It comprises:
- Social responsibility - Global competence - Global civic engagement

Global citizenship

  • Intercultural competence ( the ability to understand and interact with citizens from different cultures in a positive and authentical way (1) and plurilingualism essential for global citizenship.

Global Digital Citizenship

  • It is the combination of several characteristics, competences and values of digital and global citizenship *.
  • It is when a citizen, through the use of technology, acts as a citizen of the world, who can and should contribute to the common good.

Global Digital Citizen

  • It is a responsible, ethical citizen, using technology to promote the community on a global scale through connection and compassion.
  • A GDC should obey the principles of digital and global citizenship, be responsible, present an intervening role for the good of local, national or global society, and possess linguistic and intercultural skills capable of communicating effectively with other peoples, nations or cultures. (Marques, 2022)

  • If you have participated in international projects, do you feel they have prepared you to be a good Global Digital citizen? In what ways? What else should have been done? What do you think it is important to develop in those kinds of projects?
