THEME in Film

In a film, a theme is an idea that is explored. A film might explore several themes. For instance, some of the themes explored in The Shawshank Redemption include:

• freedom
• redemption — uh, yeah, it's in the title

• friendship
• identity

• time
• patience
• loyalty
• justice

Though a film might explore a number of themes, it usually has one overriding theme the story is built around. That theme will appear in different forms throughout a film.In The Shawshank Redemption, that overriding theme is HOPE.

Theme of Hope in The Shawshank Redemption

For this assignment, you are going to focus on the theme of HOPE in the film.

1. Watch the film The Shawshank Redemption and list three examples of HOPE from the film.2. EXPLAIN how each of your examples shows hope (50-100 words for each example).

There are a lot of examples of Hope throughout the film — big and small.
