1.Definition

Definition

Critical Race Theory is an academic and legal framework that aims to understand how racism is embedded in our education, healthcare, and legal system.

2. Thesis

Thesis

Critical Race Theory should be taught to students K-12 as it illustrates the faulty systems within America and how these systems are impacted by racism.

3. History

History

The origins of Critical Race Theory can be tracd by to the late 970s and ealry 1980s. Derrick Bell, a Harvard law professor, is often regarded as the intellectual father of CRT as he was one of the first scholars to lead this framework. Kimberle Crenshaw and Richard Delgado are legal scholars who are also credited with helping curate CRT.

4. Tenets

2. Permanence of racism

Tenets

This tenet states that racism is not abnormal to the United States, but in fact ingrained and is a permanent aspect of American society whether it be conscious or unconscious.

1. Interest Convergence

One of the first tenets of Critical Race Theory argues efforts made by African Americans to reach racial equality are allowed as long as they align with and do not undermine the needs of White people. This tenet was introduced when CRT founder Derrick Bell was analyzing Brown v. Board of Education.

4. Experiential Knowledge

Experential Knowledge states that racism is best understood by those who have experienced racism rather than the preptrators. This tenet values the counterstories of people of color that challenges the majoritarian naratives.

3. Critique of neutrality

Citique of neutrality argues against liberal idealogies such as metriotcracy, colorblindness, and neutrality and states racial equality is near impossible to attain.

6. Senate Bill No. 42

Senate Bill No. 42

Introduced by Senator Rick Brattin, Senate Bill No. 42 aims to prohibit teachers from teaching "divisive concepts". The bill defines divisive concepts as those that mean:

" The United States is fundamentally racist or sexist”

Senate Bill No. 42 prohibits the:

"Teaching about The 1619 Project or any successortheory or concept, critical race theory or any successor theory or concept, any divisive concepts, or any successor concepts or theories substantially similar to The 1619 Project or critical race theory;"

7. Counter argument

A survey conducted by Zach Goldberg and Eric Kaufmann, authors for the conservetative magazine City Journal, conducted a survey to prove that CRT is being taught in schools. The survey was conducted on a sample of 1,505 18- to 20-year-old American high school students and recent high school graduates.

8. Conclusion

Conclusion

Although impressive, the survey has flaws and fails to accurately argue its points in many ways including:

  • Failing to correctly cite the tenets of CRT
  • Failing to include current grade school students in the sample
  • Focusing on CRT related concepts rather than central CRT concepts themselves

Thanks
