What do YOU think is a dot matrix printer?
What is a Dot Matrix Printer?
A dot matrix printer is a kind of an impact printer that prints by creating a series of dots closely spaced together.
Brief History
First ever printer designed was the mechanically driven apparatus by charles babbage for the difference engine. The dot matrix printer was introduced in the 1970s.
In the 1970s and 1980s the dot matrix printers were generally considered the best combination of cost and versatality. They were the most common business and personal printers until the 1990s. The first dot matrix printer was centronics 101.
USES
What is it used for?
- All governmental organisations use it.
- Marksheets of board exams
- Train reservation tickets
- ATMS
- Banking and Passbooks
Principle
Every printer has a head. In the dot matrix printer the head has a fixed number of pins or wires. Typically the pins or wires are arranged in one or several vertical columns. The pins strike an ink-coated ribbon and force contact between the ribbon and the paper, so that each pin makes a small dot on the paper. Predominantly used to print monochrome text (black) it is also capable of printing in colour.
ADVANTAGES
- Can print on multi part forms and carbon copies.
- Low printing cost per page.
- Can be used on continuous form paper, useful for data logging.
- Reliable and durable
DISADVANTAGES
- Noisy
- Limited print quality
- Low printing speed
- Limited colour printing
