The geographical features of the Maya civilisation

Discover where the Maya civilisation was located.

The Maya civilisation was spread across the Yucatan Peninsula in southeastern Mexico, Guatemala and Belize; as well as parts of Honduras and El Salvador. The Maya built most of their cities in the Yucatan Peninsula: 76,300 miles of largely flat land between the Gulf of Mexico and the Caribbean Sea. The Peninsula is made of limestone rocks covered with thin, dry soil. There are natural freshwater sinkholes (large, water-filled cavities in the ground) and caves.

Timeline activity

Use the instructions to help create your timeline.

  1. Draw a line approximately 148 cm long.
  2. Mark ‘2000 BC’ at the left-hand edge of the line and ‘1700’ at the other end.
  3. Mark 4 cm increments along the length of the timeline.
  4. Add the years in 100-year intervals from 2000 BC until 1700.
  5. Cut out bars of different coloured paper to represent each period of the Maya civilisation.
  6. Glue the Maya civilisation periods in one row under the timeline.
  7. Create bars to represent the following British periods: Stone Age, Bronze Age, Iron Age, Romans, Anglo-Saxons and Vikings.
  8. Stick the British periods in a row under the Maya civilisation periods.
  9. Label each period.
  10. If time, add bars to represent the periods of other world civilisations living at the same time.
