MAGNETISM

Magnetism is the ability to attract magnetic materials

Magnets attract certain metals, such as iron, nickel and cobalt.

MAGNETS ATRACT CERTAIN METALS SUCH AS IRON, NICKEL AND COBALT. THE ABILITY TO ATRACT MAGNETIC MATERIALS IS CALLED MAGNETISM.

TYPES OF MAGNETS

Clasification 1

NATURAL

ARTIFICIAL

They can be found in nature

They are made by people

PERMANENT

INDUCED

They only have a temporary magnetic force

They never lose their magnetism

EXAMPLE

MAGNETIC POLES

All magnets have two opposite poles: north and south.

If we put two magnets together...

If we put two magnets together...

their identical poles will repel each other.

their opposite poles will attract each other.

MAGNETIC FIELDS

A magnetic field is the area around a magnet where its force has an effect.

We cannot see magnetic fields...

but we can see how they affect objects like iron filings (tiny pieces of iron)

THE EARTH'S MAGNETISM

The core of the Eearth is mostly composed of liquid iron. This core of liquid iron acts like a giant magnet with two poles: the north magnetic pole and the south magnetic pole.

The Earth also has an enormous magnetic field because the core of the Earth is filled with molten iron.(hierro fundido). This magnetic field protect us from harmful cosmic radiation.

The compass

The compass is an instrument used for finding your way.

How does it work?

MAGNETS AND ELECTROMAGNETS

electromagnetism

Electromagnetism is the relationship between electricity and magnetism. Magnetism is created when electricity flows through magnetic materials.

MAGNETS AND ELECTROMAGNETS

WHICH MATERIALS ARE MAGNETIC?

All magnetic materials are metallic. But not all metals are magnetic.

ELECTROMAGNETS

Electromagnets are objects that act like magnets when an electrical current pass through them.

ELECTROMAGNETS

They are NOT permanent magnets because they are activated by electricity.
When do they lose their magnetism?

HOW CAN WE CREATE AN ELECTROMAGNET?

We can create an electromagnet by coiling wire (enrollando alambre) around a piece of magnetic metal (like an iron bolt) and connecting it to a battery.

HOW CAN WE CREATE AN ELECTROMAGNET?

If we break the connection and open the circuit, the object loses its magnetic force.
When we close the circuit, the object becomes an electromagnet.

WHERE CAN WE FIND MAGNETS?

We can find magnets everywhere: in our home, in transport...
