Brief History
In 1859 an event called Bleeding Kansas happened in Kansas. This was a tragic event where many people were killed, slaughtered, and murdered in cold blood in their front yard. During this time, murder, destruction, and mayhem had became a code of conduct. There was three type of people that were involved in this mayhem, pro-slavery, free staters, and abolitionists. Kansas was holding a vote using popular soveriugnty to help decide if it was a free or pro-slavery state. The people that lived in Kansas wanted a free state but, surrounding sates, mainly boarder ruffians from Missouri heard about this and rushed into Kansas armed, and demanded a pro-slavery government. Abolitionists made their own government in Kansas and pro-slavery people attacked them because they didn't like that, then that attack led to Bleeding Kansas. Which is one of the reasons we went into the Civil War.
Daily Lives
Mahala Doyle Letter
This is a letter written by Mahala Doyle written to John Brown before he went into Bleeding Kansas. In this small part of her letter she is saying that she has to live with the horror and sounds of her children and husband being murdered because of this man from this event. This represents the way that Bleeding Kansas had a impact on Daily Lives on this woman and many others who experienced these things. Because of this she now has to live with this pain and ache of her experience with this for her whole life.
"O how it pained my heart to hear the dying groans of my husband and children if this scrawl give you any consolation you are welcome to it,"(Doyle).
Society
Kansas was small and it didn't have that many people in it . Just when the voting started for it to elected as a free or slave state that changed real quick. The population of Kansas tripled because of all the pro-slavery people rushing in to vote. Because of this Kansas was elected as a free state. This represents society because it shows how Kansas's population literally tripled in size from what it originally was. This means that most of the population was from other states, and not its own. Due to this the pro slavery people who were voting were sure to win.
Government
This is a picture that shows abolitionist Charles Summer getting attacked by representative Preston Brooks in the Congress room. Charles Summer was giving a speech about his expereience at Bleeding Kansas and he got attacked because he was talking smack about a specific pro slavery person. This represents its goverment because it shows that bleeding Kansas not only brought conflict on the streets but into the Congress room to.
