All or most of my content is in the form of a Flipchart! What do I do??

Why won’t the district renew the ActivInspire (Flipcharts) software license?
Can I purchase the software on my own and just download it to my computer?
Can I just keep using the old version?
What will replace it?
Migrating to ClassFlow
Exporting Flipcharts

The need for this type of software, in order to achieve interactivity, is obsolete. Old interactive whiteboards are being replaced* with Promethean and BenQ Panels, neither of which require the software.

Why won’t the district renew the ActivInspire (Flipcharts) software license?

*My department is Educational Technology, not the Division of Technology. EdTech is a supportive department and does not handle, plan, or make decisions about the physical technology in the district. I wish I had more information about this for you.

What will replace it?

I don’t believe there will be a direct replacement software for ActivInspire and Flipcharts, because all of the interactivity that can be achieved with the ActivInspire software can be achieved without purchasing software now. There is not a need for the software and the flipchart file type anymore. The technology has been improved. The Promethean and BenQ boards being installed have access to the internet and a ton of interactive features built directly into the board. Not to mention, teachers can now achieve the same, if not more and better, interactivity from web-based applications like ClassFlow, Canvas, Google Tools, Edpuzzle, Pear Deck, and MANY, many more.

Can I just keep using the old version?

Sure, but you are taking a risk. Software needs to be updated regularly. When it is not updated regularly, files stop working correctly. Flipcharts that aren’t running on the most up to date software run the risk of being ‘corrupted’, in which case, the content is often not salvageable. In order to update, the newest version would have to be purchased.

Yes and no. Yes, you can download and use ActivInspire for free. However, you should know that the Personal Edition or the free version of the software doesn't contain all of the features that Promethean currently offers. To access all functions, you will have to pay for the Professional plan. However, you will not be able to install the software onto your FWISD device. It will ask for an Administrator username and password. To install any software on your FWISD device, you will need to either download it from the Software Center (Microsoft), from the Manager (Apple), or submit a Help Desk Ticket to request to have it installed. Those tickets don’t come to my department and we don’t have the administrative rights or credentials. You COULD install your personal purchase of the software on a personal device.

Option 1: Migrate your Flipcharts to ClassFlowMy suggestion is to migrate ALL of your Flipcharts to ClassFlow-Promethean’s online lesson delivery system. This option will allow you to keep as much of your content and interactivity intact as possible. ClassFlow is free for teachers. You can create your own personal account with a personal (NOT FWISD) email OR you already have a FWISD ClassFlow account that you can use as well. To log into your FWISD ClassFlow, be sure you’ve logged into through Classlink first, then go here and Choose Log In with Microsoft. Option 2: Export your Flipcharts You can export your Flipcharts as PDFs, JPGs. This will not retain the interactivity, but it will save your content. If you are migrating to ClassFlow, this is not essential.

  • If you export your Flipcharts as JPGs, each slide will be saved as a seprate picture. The interactivity is not saved; however, you can easily add your pictures/slides into a Google Slides presentation and add interactivity using PearDeck. Click here to see a basic tutorial.

ActivInspire Flipcharts open with blank pages

When opening a corrupt Flipchart, you will notice that some or all of the content on your page is missing, but a preview is visible in the Page Browser. If your Flipcharts are becoming corrupt, first look at how they are being saved: Ensure that you are saving your work to a stable location, i.e. directly to your hard drive. ⚠️ Saving to a USB memory stick or external hard drive can cause problems if the connection is interrupted, or the device is faulty or disconnected prematurely. ⚠️ Saving to a network location can cause corruption if your network connection is unreliable or the file has not uploaded fully before the computer is disconnected from the network.

Possible Solutions

Check Your Temporary Folder Update the Software

From Promethean: Keeping your software up to date and saving your work to a stable location will prevent your Flipcharts from becoming corrupt.

Unfortunately, there are no other solutions for a file that has already been corrupted.

Check Your Temp Folder

Click the images to see them larger.

Check your Temp folder is not full and empty it periodically. Your ActivInspire Flipchart is stored here whilst you work on it, and if the Temp folder is full, your work may not be saved. This is sometimes the case with larger Flipchart files. To empty your Temp folder, make sure ActivInspire is not running, then open My Computer and type %temp% in the search bar. Hit Enter. Select all of the files and folders, and delete them. You may receive a message if some of the files are in use; click Skip. If your Temp folder is empty but you continue to experience problems with corrupt Flipcharts, it is recommend updating your software*.

*Since the district is not renewing the lisence, this will not be an option of a FWISD device.
