Education in the Gupta Empire ( Nalanda University)
University Religious Facts-
The Gupta Empire is a period of learning meaning that throughout the whole empire, the Guptas built many resources of learning such as colleges and universities. Many of these places were either Hindu or Buddhist. Any gender could've joined these schools, depending on your position, but most of these schools were for males, but some of them were open to females, if you were the teacher's daughter.
Religious and Non-Religious Classes
There were many forms of teaching from non- religious subjects to religious subjects. Most of the time, universities taught more religious training. Almost all students attended these classes. These non-religious classes consisted of mathematics astronomy, and chemistry. Religious classes often taught most Sanskrit, which is an ancient Indian language that most people are taught. They could also study sculpture, painting, music, and dancing. Although, religious classes were the most popular.
Different Types Of Training-
Although there were many famous locations for universities, the most popular or so called, famous university was located in Nalanda, India (The Nalanda University) which was Buddhist. This university was really big in size! It consisted of eight colleges, three libraries, a hospital, and a monastery, which is a building joined by a community of monks under religious vows. Although, this university was religiously Buddhist, they were also taught in not only Buddhist philosophy, but also Hindu philosophy. The subjects they mostly studied were logic, grammar, or medicine.
University locations and facts!-
This is the bark that was used to make special medicine! This one was used to make aspirin.
This is a closeup of ants trying to close up a wound!
In the Nalanda University, students that would study medicine were taught how to make medicine and cures for the future. They learned about different practices and treatments, and they were also trained how to question patients for their physical problems. The cures that they were taught were made from bark, roots, leaves, and minerals. To stitch up wounds, they had to learn from ants. They would gather giant ants to grab their front claws, and they used these to stitch up wounds. It is believed that most of the Hindu doctors were very skilled at performing surgery on other patients, and they would do the same things these students were learning!
