Talk-Read-Talk-Write

Setting a context: Show/Describe scenarios and situations and encourage students to solve a problem.

Talk #1

01

Cultivating knowledge: Students read aloud a small section of the text and annotate the translation of unknown words. Students can also write a summary after each section they read.

Read

02

Talk #2

03

Co-constructing understanding: Students work with their group to ask each other questions, share opinions, and discuss how the text relates to their lives. Motley (2016) suggests that younger MLs might need more intervals of “Read-Talk 2” before getting overwhelmed with details.

Write

04

Demonstrating understanding: Use writing response tasks for older MLs and sentence frames for younger MLs. Students can also return to the scenario presented in Talk 1 and come up with a solution to the problem.
