Digital Tool: Genially

Dr Leanne Rowlands SFHE PGCert Digital Education, Module 2 - Micro Teach

aims

Student Learning Outcomes
  • Develop understanding of RM and analysis
  • Applying knowlege to real world problems
  • Evalutating information to create an asynchronous digital artefact

Your Learning Outcomes
  • Gain an understanding of benefits of game-based learning for 'dry' RM topics
  • Develop critical understanding of applictions and functions of Genially beyond facilitating comprehension

Digital capabilities

Digital creation is about digital production of content e.g. writing, imaging, audio, interfaces.... Digital problem-solving is your ability to solve problems, make decisions and answer questions e.g. use digital evidence to solve problems, share evidence using digital methods ; digital research methods and tools

Digital learning is the ability to turn digital opportunities into personal learning gains e.g. participate in digital learning opportunities and use resources, use digital tools to organise, plan, reflect

30 second shout out what words come to mind when you think about students' experience of learning RM?

Game-based learning

Borrowing of game- principles and applying them to learning to engage users (Trybus, 2015)

You can drag the light to search through the darkness

Opportunity for active learning, play, promoting engagement. 'Gamers' can become producers not just consumers of the information (Pho & Dinscore, 2015)

Not games for play - but games for learning activities that can incramentally introduce concepts and guide learner towards a goal

A reasercher is interested in the impact of positive emotion on attention. They randomly allocate participants to two groups (positive vs neutral sitmuli) and measure reaction times on a dot-probe task. What type of design is this?

A researcher wants to study the effect of fear on attention. They collect participants with arachnaphobia (fear of spiders) and get them to do a dot probe task with real spiders crawling on them. Which best describes this study?

Sound ethics. low ecological validity. high internal validity

benefits and barriers

  • Many functions and templates for interactivity & game-based learning
  • Can be used for asynchronous as well as synchronous activity
  • Especially effective for asynchronous activity. Other platforms e.g. PollEv might be better for synchronous quizzes, word clouds, polls (but not for games) because it allows students to complete tasks individually on phones and it syncs to the PollEV Platform that is screen-shared
  • Synchronous games require some extra work, e.g. students into breakout rooms, 'game master'
  • Can track data of 'right' and 'wrong' answers - identifying gaps in knowledge
  • Free version does not allow for downlaodable PDFs
  • Questionable accessibility (e.g. screen-readers?)
  • Lisence issues mean we can't embed within Articulate Rise (if using free version)
  • Currently can't be used for assessments because not TII compatible
