The golden age of the British empire

  • Characterised by the reign of Queen Victoria.
  • Considered by some as the golden age of literature, especially for British novels.
  • Class-based society, a growing number of people able to vote, a growing state and economy, Britain’s status as the most powerful empire in the world.
  • The Victorian society was hierarchical in nature, with the two main aspects taken into account being gender and class.

The Transformation of America

  • During this period, America experienced a surge of industrialization, urbanization, and westward expansion.
  • The country was also deeply divided over issues like slavery, leading to the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
  • After the war, America saw the period of Reconstruction, which aimed to rebuild the South and ensure civil rights for African Americans.
  • 1901: President William McKinley was assassinated, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States, marking the end of the Victorian era in America
