- Characterised by the reign of Queen Victoria.
- Considered by some as the golden age of literature, especially for British novels.
- Class-based society, a growing number of people able to vote, a growing state and economy, Britain’s status as the most powerful empire in the world.

- The country was also deeply divided over issues like slavery, leading to the Civil War from 1861 to 1865.
- After the war, America saw the period of Reconstruction, which aimed to rebuild the South and ensure civil rights for African Americans.
- 1901: President William McKinley was assassinated, and Vice President Theodore Roosevelt became the 26th President of the United States, marking the end of the Victorian era in America
