This allows to express an action that occurred before another action, both being in the past.

fUNCtion of the past perfect

El objetivo principal del present perfect es crear un enlace entre el pasado y el presente, en el que se puede señalar la conclusión o no de una acción ocurrida en el pasado.

Se forma como en español: con el pasado del verbo haber en su función de auxiliar (had), más el participio pasado del verbo principal

The past perfect tense in English is used in everyday, informal communication as well as in academic texts or formal contexts.

The main objective of the present perfect is to create a link between the past and the present, in which the conclusion or not of an action that occurred in the past can be indicated.

El pasado perfecto del inglés se usa tanto en las comunicaciones diarias e informales como en textos académicos o contextos formales

It is formed as in Spanish: with the past tense of the verb haber in its auxiliary function (had), plus the past participle of the main verb

Esta estructura se resume en: verbo auxiliar “to have” (had) + participio pasado del verbo principal.

This structure can be summarized as: auxiliary verb “to have” (had) + past participle of the main verb.

Rules for the formation of Past Perfect

Title 1

El Past Perfect se forma con el verbo "have" en pasado simple (que es 'had' para todas las personas) más el participio pasado.

Las frases negativas en el past perfect son iguales a las frases afirmativa pero con la adicción de la palabra "not".

Questions are formed by changing the order of the words.Las preguntas se forman cambiando el orden de las palabras.

Negative sentences in the past perfect are the same as affirmative sentences but with the addition of the word "not".

Negative (Negativo)

The Past Perfect is formed with the verb "have" in the past simple (which is 'had' for everyone) plus the past participle

Affirmative (Afirmativo)

I had fallen asleep when the telephone rang Me había quedado dormido cuando sonó el teléfono)

Had they celebrated their anniversary? ¿Habían celebrado su aniversario?

I had not [hadn’t] visited the Louvre before so I didn’t know where the Mona Lisa was. (No había visitado el Museo del Louvre antes, así que no sabía donde estaba la Mona Lisa.)
