Students will have learned about genes, alleles, and dominant & recessive traits before the assignment is given.

The Driving Question

What types of diseases are caused by genetic mutations and how are they inherited?

The Assignment

The students' task will be to research a disease of their choice that is caused by genetic mutation and then create an educational poster about said disease using Canva. The students will present their finished posters to the class and turn in a reflection about the assignment process and what they learned.

Assignment Directions

• The student can do their project on any genetic disease they choose, but no two students may have the same topic. The disease will be approved by the teacher before beginning the assignment.

• The students have full creative license with their posters as long as they meet all of the content requirements.

• Students will have an "accountability partner." The partners will give peer review and feedback to one another to ensure that the other has met the assigment requirments.
• After presenting the final project, students will turn in a reflection. It should include how the student felt about the project, what difficulties they may have had, what they learned, and what they may have wanted to do differently.

Poster Content Requirements

• A brief overview of the disease
• At least one school-approprite picture related to the disease
• How the genetic mutation occurs or is inherited
• What % or number of people have this disease
• What demographics are primarily affected
• How it can be treated or prevented
