What is glomerulonephritis?

  • Glomerulonephritis is the inflammation of the filters inside your kidney known as Glomeruli.
  • Inflammation to the glomeruli causes toxins and metabolic wastes to not be filtered correctly into urine, this results in the build up of waste in the body, leading to severe or life threatening problems if not treated.
  • Glomerulonephritis affects the glomeruli, specifically it affects the basement membrane, mesangium, or capillary endothelium of the glomeruli. It affects them by attacking their respective tissue layers.
  • This affects the structure of the glomeruli by causing inflammation in them, because of this the glomeruli are not able to filter correctly, leading to the mass buildup of metabolic waste, causing problems.

What causes Glomerulonephritis?

Glomerulonephritis is classified as an autoimmune disease, this is basically saying that the immune system in your body is attacking its own tissues. In this case, your immune system is attacking the glomeruli in your body. Specific causes are unknown, but here are some factors that can cause glomerulonephritis

Causes/Risk Factors

Risk Factors

  • Diabeties and high blood pressure
  • Family history
Pre-existing kidney problemsMedications/toxins

Causes

  • Viral Kidney infections (Hepattitis B C, HIV, Bacterial endocartitis
  • Autoimmuse diseases such as Lupus, Goodpasture Syndrome,
  • Although rare, family history
  • Diabeties and high blood pressure

Prognosis

Rate of incidence of glomerulonephritis

Children who have glomerulonephritis usually recover completely quite quickly. if are diagnosed with chronic glomerulonephritis, you need prolonged treatment or else chronic glomerulonephritis will lead to kidney failure.

Major Symptoms

It is possible that you may not experience any symptoms of glomerulonephritis, usually, you will know you have glomerulonephritis because of a routine urinary check.

Abnormal Urine

Fatiuge

Muscle Cramps

  • Pink or cola-colored urine due to red blood cells in the urine.
  • Bubbly or foamy urine due to excess protein in your urine.
  • Decrease in urination

Muscle cramps, especially near your bladder and lower back region

Glomerulonephritis Treatment

Treatment depends on if have the acute version (suddenly comes up) or chronic (has been building up).

  • Acute- no serious treatment, will go away itself
  • Chronic- medications to stall and possible cure it
What happens if glomerulonephritis leads to kidney failure? You’ll have to get treated by kidney dialysis meaning a machine will filter out your blood for you, since your kidneys can’t. The other treatment is a kidney transplant.

DR

  • Immunosuppressants: suppress your immunte system (may lead to other infections)
  • Steriods: suppresses immune system with lower dosages after your kidneys start to recover

Glomerulonephritis Diagnosis

Glomerulonephritis can be diagnosed by tests taken on your during routine checkups. These tests include…

  1. Urine tests: a test that checks the appearance, concentration, and waste content of Urine. Abnormal urine can lead to a diagnosis of glomerulonephritis.
  2. Blood tests: monitors the blood, if you have an abnormal amount of waste in the blood, glomerulonephritis can be possible.
