Dialect

In Modena, apart from Italian, we also speak a local dialect which comes from vulgar Latin. These days it isn't so common, especially among young people. It is mostly used by elderly people.

Literature

As in other Italian cities, also Modena is important for the history of Italian literature. For example, the famous poet Giosuè Carducci who described our territory with beautiful words. Not many people know that the first manual of Italian literature was written in Modena by Girolamo Tiraboschi. It was published in 1782 and it was an important book for the study of National literature.

Art

Galleria Estense is an important museum that exhibits the collection of works of art that belonged to the Dukes of Este, an aristocratic European family. It was founded in 1854 by Francesco V d'Austria-Este. Another important monument in Modena is the Duomo, the cathedral. It was built by Lanfranco in 1319 and it's part of Unesco heritage.

Enzo Ferrari and Ernesto Maserati

Enzo Ferrari was a businessman, sport director and pilote, founder of the homonymous car house, Scuderia Ferrari, that won Formula 1 nine times. Ernesto Maserati was a pilot, engineer and businessman. His brothers and he founded Maserati in 1914, which produces luxury cars in Modena.
