Implementing genre-based pedagogy
1. Build content knowledge
Start with step one!
The Teaching and Learning Cycle
2. Deconstruct a model text
4. Independent text creation
3. Construct a text together
Adapted from Hamman-Ortiz (2019)
Build backround knowledge on a topic through class activities.
Step 1: Build content knowledge
In this step, teachers and students will...
These can include real-life learning like field trips or in-class readings, videos, and other kinds of multimodal instruction.

Step 2: Deconstruct a model text
In this step, teachers and students will...
Read a model text of the genre and discuss its purpose (for example: does it describe, narrative, inform, or persuade?)
Analyze structural components of the text, ideally using a graphic organizer that would be revisited in stage 3
Repeat this process with other model texts of the same structure to make students familiar with multiple examples of the genre text

Step 3: Construct a text together
In this step, teachers and students will...
Fill in a graphic organizer similar to the one used in step 2 when researching and constructing the text together in class.
Incorporate mini-lessons on linguistic features used in the model text. Return to model texts from step 2 to analyze use.
