Of the 328 articles and multimedia pieces published in 2022, here are the 10 most-read articles based on the number of views they received when writing this article. The Big Six’s big media game tops the list with 18,900 views, followed by the 2022 Senior send-off-map. Although the features section topped the list for the number of articles published per category, readers most frequently read opinion pieces. Amongst the multimedia, photos topped the list in number published and were also viewed the most. Although The Big Six’s big media game shedding new light on the corporate monopoly of media attracted readers, three out of the top 10 articles covered topics involving multiple students or community members in a single article. In addition to being interactive, the 2022 Senior send-off map covers 60 senior class students and where they are headed to college. Three out of the top ten most-read articles covered topics on race and immigrant minorities, reflecting reader interest in stories of diverse populations in the community. Journalists weigh newsworthiness based on seven news values: impact, proximity, timeliness, conflict/controversy, human interest, and novelty/oddity. The majority of the top ten articles cover not one but many of these values.

Newspapers and journalists value the comments of their readers. Participation through commenting is one of the most interactive parts of the Pathfinder that readers frequently take advantage of. Studies have shown that commenting on journalistic stories has become one of the most prevalent participation options that news media offers users on their websites and social media channels. According to a study on the comment spaces at The Guardian, “below the line” comment spaces have grown to be one of the most popular and widely engaged forms of user-generated content on news websites. Comment spaces provide a space for public debate in which journalists can hear from — and directly engage with — their audience.
