Warm up : What does the image tell you?

The teacher will paste the words: History, Writers, Places, and Musicians on the whiteboard. The teacher asks students to stand up and make a circle in the middle of the classroom. Then, the teacher will play a song. The teacher situates a bottle in the middle of the students and provides instructions. When the bottle stoppings, the teacher will present a picture related to the words mentioned, and the students will respond to questions like: What can you see in the image? What the picture represents? Then, the students go to the board and paste the images into the correct category

The Rise of Afro American Literature(1920s - 1935)

The literary achievement of African-Americans was one of the most striking literary developments of the post-Civil War era.

IMPORTANT DETAILS DURING AFRO AMERICAN LITERATURE

*Booker, Paul Laurance, and Jame Weldon focused on the roots of black American writing took hold, notably in the forms of autobiography, protest literature, sermons, poetry, and song. -African American literature began to enter the mainstream of publishing and be read by black and white audiences. -African American literature began to be defined and analyzed. Black women began to achieve success as novelists, poets, writers and artists. -The first writings by blacks in America was autobiographical and became known as the Slave Narrative -Three themes developed in early African American writings around the issue of slavery: accommodation, protest, and escape.

THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

The Harlem Renaissance was an African-American artistic and intellectual movement that flourished throughout the 1920s. The Harlem Renaissance marked a cultural period during the 1920’s when African-Americans celebrated their heritage through music, art, literature, politics and social movements.

Harlem in the 1920s was like nowhere else on Earth. During World War I (1914-18), a mass movement called the Great Migration, an exodus of 6 million blacks from the South to Northern cities like New York, Chicago, and Detroit (1916-70), began bringing African-Americans by the tens of thousands from the rural South to Northern cities

THE HARLEM RENAISSANCE

CHARACTERISTICS

It provided equal opportunities to African-Americans by eradicating racial differentiation which was created by the white Americans. It appreciated the culture, tradition, ethnicity, heritage, language, and talent of every AfricanAmerican It wiped out the memories of slavery, poverty, ignorance, terrorism, and subjugation of AfricanAmericans which was created by the white Americans in their past.

THE NEW NEGRO MOVEMENT

The New Negro Movement; as it was called during its time, the Harlem Renaissance was essentially the flowering of a unique African-American culture. African-American writers, poets, artists, musicians and intellectuals found new ways to express pride in their race and culture. Central to the Harlem Renaissance was the concept that the time had come for African Americans to take their rightful place in society and contribute to culture in meaningful ways. Although the movement peaked throughout the late 1920s, its impact continued into the 1930s and beyond.

MUSIC

Jazz became widelypopular in the 1920s. It was a form of music that combined African rhythms, blues, and ragtimeto produce a unique sound. Jazz spread from its birthplace in New Orleans to other parts of thecountry and made its way into the nightclubs featured popular jazz musicians such as Louis Armstrong and Duke Ellington, and singers such as the jazz and blues great, Bessie Smith.Harlem’s most famous night club was the Cotton Club. It made stars of many African-Americanperformers, but only white customers were allowed in the club
