Group Development

Group development refers to the process by which members of newly formed work teams learn about their teammates, establish their roles and responsibilities, and acquire the task work and teamwork capabilities required to coordinate their effort to perform effectively as a team The goal of most research on group development is to learn why and how small groups change over time. To quality of the output produced by a group, the type and frequency of its activities, its cohesiveness, the existence of group conflict.

Theories of Group Development

Kurt Lewin (1890-1947) was a social psychologist whose extensive work covered studies of leadership styles and their effects, work on group decision-making, the development of force field theory, the unfreeze/change/refreeze change management model, the action research approach to research, and the group dynamics approach to training, especially in the form of T-Groups

Bruce Wayne Tuckman (November 24, 1938 – March 13, 2016) was an American Psychological Researcher who carried out his research into the theory of group dynamics.[1] In 1965, he published a theory known as "Tuckman's stages of group development"

Forming:-

sTorming:-

  • Interpersonal conflicts can arise as the team
  • grows accustomed to how everyone works.
  • Improve team communication
  • Articulate team and individual needs
  • Agree on how to handle conflict productively

Norming:-

•Team cohesion and unit •Conflict and difference and resolved •Acceptance of group and members •Standards evolve •Group norms established and roles adopted •Leader should emphasize unity within the team and help clarity team norm and values

Performing:-

  • Conflicts have been resolved, processes are in place, and the team is working at peak performance.
  • Capture and document learning points Continue to build team spirit.
  • Encourage proactivity and autonomy.

Adjourning:-

  • success you made it...
  • This is the final stage of team development process. It is also known as the transforming process and happens after the team accomplishes what it set out to do.
  • The adjouring stage triggers a sense of closure

  • Some describe stage as "deforming or mourning"
