RELATIVE CLAUSES
RELATIVE CLAUSES are subordinate clauses that give more information about the person or thing mentioned in the main clause. Relative clauses are introduced by a relative pronoun. The relative pronoun can function as the subject or the object of the clause.
WHERE
WHICH/THAT
WHOSE
WHEN
WHO/ THAT
DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
They provide information that is essential. Without these clauses, the sentences would be incomplete. When the pronoun is the object of the relative clause we can omit it.
NON- DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
They provide information that is not essential to understanding the sentence. They always go between commas. Pronouns here can never be omitted or substituted by that.
RELATIVE CLAUSES son clausulas subordinadas que nos dan información sobre la persona o cosa de la que se habla en la frase principal. Son introducidas por un pronombre de relativo que puede ser el objeto o el sujeto de la frase.
WHICH/THAT ( objetos)
WHOSE (posesión)
WHO/ THAT (personas)
WHOM (=her, him them) object
WHERE (lugar)
WHEN ( tiempo)

Cuando el pronombre es el objeto de la frase de relativo se puede omitir.( =cuando hay un sujeto detrás) Shakespeare is the person who/that wrote Hamlet (subject) He's the man who/that / (-) I met at the conference (object)
NON- DEFINING RELATIVE CLAUSES
Nos dan información extra, que no es esencial para entender la frase. Se presenta entre comas. Los pronombres nunca se pueden sustituir por that ni omitir. Paris, where he grew up, is the capital of France.
