In 1848, Andrew Carnegie ( 1835-1919) left Scotland with his parents and started working in a cotton mill before becoming a railway telegraph operator. During the Civil War, he improved the military telegraph, went into bridge construction, purchased an oil company in 1864 and created the Carnegie Steel Trust. A great philanthropist, he used his huge fortune to fund charities and build hospitals, libraries, schools etc. as well as the Carnegie Concert Hall.
Rockefeller
After brief studies, John D. Rockefeller ( 1839-1937) started working as a bookkeeper and impressed his employers with his honesty. He created his own company before the age of 20 and went into oil refining in 1862. After 1911 he spend large amounts of his fortune on philantropic work and created the Rockefeller Foundation to which he had donated 235 million dollars by 1929.
