Civil rights Movement

The revolt

Stop segregation

Mamie took her fight to the people and gave speeches to overflow crowds across the country. Black people were galvanized. NAACP membership was soaring. African Americans were angered by Emmett's murder and the injustice, and moved by the loss of an only child to a young mother.

Mamie Till's courage and perseverance encouraged black people in the United States to fight for their rights.

In December 1955, Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat to a white passenger on a Montgomery city bus. She was arrested for violating Alabama's bus segregation laws.

Martin Luther King Jr. called for a citywide bus boycott. The civil rights movement was officially born.
