Types:
- ZERO CONDITIONAL --- Very possible - FIRST CONDITIONAL --- Possible - SECOND CONDITIONAL --- Unlikely but still possible - THIRD CONDITIONAL --- Impossible
ZERO CONDITIONAL
Permanent truths, such as scientific facts and general habits.
If + present simple, ... present simple
Example: If water reaches 100 degrees, it boils.
Zero conditional exercises:
1. If I'm tired, I (go)_________ to bed early. 2. If you eat a lot, you (put on) ________ weight. 3. When you feel sick, you (go) ________ to the doctor. 4. I use the dictionary if I (not know) ________ a word.
FIRST CONDITIONAL
Something that is possible to happen in the future.
If + present simple, ... will + infinitive
Example: If it rains, I will go to the cinema.
First conditional exercises:
1. If she has time, she (go) ________ to the gym. 2. If it's sunny, we (have) ________ a picnic. 3. They (arrive) ________ at ten o'clock if they catch the bus now. 4. If I finish my homework, I (watch) ________ TV.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
Something that isn't very likely (possible) to happen in the future.
If + past simple, ... would + infinitive
Example: If I won the lottery, I would travel around the world.
SECOND CONDITIONAL
If I was you... If I were you...
If she/he was you... If she/he were you...
If my sister/Peter was you... If my sister/Peter were you...
Second conditional exercises:
1. If I lived in London, I (go) ________ to Hyde Park everyday. 2. If I (be) ________ you, I would visit my parnts more often. 3. If I were rich, I (buy) ________ a house near the lake. 4. If she (speak) ________ Chinese, I would travel to China.
THIRD CONDITIONAL
Something that is impossible to happen because it refers to the past and we can't change the past.
If + past perfect, ... would have + past participle
Example: If he had studied, he would have passed the exam.
