Use a comma to show a pause after a clause or phrase. In a complex sentence (one independent and one dependent clause), use a comma to separate the clauses IF the dependent clause comes first. Examples: Running at top speed, the cheetah chased its prey. During the night, Linda couldn't sleep. After the rain stopped, we resumed the baseball game.
