this week: dialogue & flow quotes
Dialogue occurs when characters speak to one another. When a character speaks in writing, that speech is indicated with quotation marks. Dialogue quotes are introduced by dialogue words like "whispered" and "shouted." Readers naturally pause before a dialogue quote. Place a comma before the quote and begin the quote with a capital letter. Flow quotes are different because they naturally blend into the text. Since readers don't pause, you do not need a comma or a capital letter. Example: Heather argued that she "needs a llama."
