What is a noun?

A noun is a person, place, thing or idea.

What is a pronoun?

A word that takes the place of a noun.

he she we I they us me you them we it that

A pronoun refers back to the noun it replaces.

The woman bought a cupcake. She ate it.

Pronouns must agree in number/person.

Pronouns must agree with the antecedent in number. Example: The man grabbed the groceries and took them to his car.

The words everybody, anybody, anyone, each, neither, nobody, someone, and somebody are singular and take singular pronouns.

Pronouns must agree with the antecedent in person. Example: The girl took the stage and she started to sing.

Singular

Plural

If the noun is singular (like “cat”), the pronoun will also be singular (like “it”). Example: The cat ran away because it was scared.

Plural If the noun is plural (like “boys”), the pronoun will also be plural (like “they”). Example: The boys listened because they were in class.

Subjective Pronouns

Object pronouns are the the receiver of the action of the verb or from whom the action was performed.

Subject pronouns are the subjects of a sentence. They usually appear BEFORE the verb.

The pig loves his pen
He loves to eat hay.

Possessive Pronouns

A possessive pronoun is a pronoun that is used to indicate possession or ownership. This pen is my pen, not your pen. This pen is mine, not yours.

Intensive Pronouns

An intensive pronoun adds emphasis to a statement. Example: I did it myself!
