Liver

Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease affects about a quarter of the U.S. population.18 Studies show that this condition may be more common in those with psoriasis.17

Skin

Sometimes people with psoriasis develop other skin diseases, like hidradenitis suppurativa (HS). HS causes painful lesions in areas like the armpits and groin.25

Intestines

People with psoriasis are up to 71 percent and 153 percent more likely to develop ulcerative colitis and Crohn’s disease, respectively, than the general population.19

Lungs

Lung diseases like asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease are more common in people with psoriasis than those without the skin condition.5

Joints

Approximately a third of people with psoriasis will develop psoriatic arthritis, which causes stiff and swollen joints.20 Some people with psoriasis may also develop rheumatoid arthritis.23

Heart

Psoriasis is associated with several risk factors for heart disease, including metabolic syndrome and atherosclerosis (fatty buildup in the arteries).11,13

Brain

Many people with psoriasis experience depression. Depression can be related to feelings of shame and social isolation as well as chronic inflammation or other health problems.3
