Charles Spencer Chaplin was knew under the name Charlie Chaplin and in the silent cinema, he was a popular actor, producer, scriptwriter and director too. He was born on 16 April 1889. His parents, Charles and Hanna were artists of Music-hall and they didn't have a lot of money. Miss Chaplin fought to bring up Charles and his brother Sydney despite his failing health (she ended up being committed to a psychiatric hospital). At 10 years old, however, Charles started his professional career in a troupe of tap dancing children: the Eight Lancashire Lads. More later, he became integrated into an other troop: the Casey’s Circus, where he shines by his imitations of famous comedians. At the end of 1913, he created the costume and make-up that will make him famous and took the path to international fame and affection. In 1918, he set up his own studio and in 1919, he was co-founder of United Artist in Hollywood. In 1940, with the film « the dictator » he proves that he can edit sound and speech to perfection. In 1952, Charlie Chaplin went in London to present the movie "Limelight" . A large part of his career spent in the United States but he couldn't come back so he decided to settle definitively in Swiss. From 1950, in spite of his health problems, he never stopped working and concentrating on the reissue of his films either. He had a "Golden Lion" at the Venice Film Festival in 1972 and a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame in 1970 as well. Oona O'neill was his fourth wife and had 8 children with him. They lived together as far as Charlie Chaplin died on the night of December 25th, 1977 at 88 years old.
