Working with Clerical Staff

01

Consult the District

Identify current duties

Start with Standards

Look at the job descriptions outlined by the district. Seperate tasks and duties between staff.

Reflect and revise on who should do what.

Describe how the Library Media Center should be operated.

Communicate These Expectations

Franklin, P., & Stephens, C. G. (2006). Managing Clerical Staff in the Library Media Center. School Library Media Activities Monthly, 23(3), 46.

Rationale:

It can be difficult to know what the expectations for clerical staff should be, especially as a new librarian. These are good tips on how to navigate this new professional relationship.

GRant-writing

02

When looking to get funding via grants, start small and work your way up, collaborate with others, and focus on how the money will benefit the students.

Anderson, C. (2011). FREE MONEY! Knowledge Quest, 40(2), 10-13.

Rationale:

As someone who has never written grants before, these tips give me a place to start and a focus in seaching for funds.

Transforming Library Spaces

03

When on a Budget:

  • Get rid of things that aren't needed or used
  • Rearrange existing furniture
  • Get creative with sources: district warehouse, donations, grants

Rendina, D. (2015, October 27). How to transform your library space on a budget [blog post]. Knowledge Quest

Rationale:

As a librarian, I will look for ways to improve the space using the least amount of money. At least for the first few years, I'll use these tips rather than asking for large sums of money for redesign.

THANK YOU!
