Learning Task 1
Group Task With your group you will find examples of ‘typical’ adolescent behaviour, as seen in the media (such as film, television, printed or digital news, social media, literature, art, music etc) and at your internship then analyse these behaviours using (at least)the theory and literature from the course. You may supplement your analysis using independently sourced materials. You should present your analyses in a creative format such as a diary, scrapbook, game, case file etc. The product may also be delivered digitally in the form of a vlog, blog, website, social media profile etc. All products must be accompanied by an APA bibliography page and an appendix that includes any observations/interviews you have conducted. You should aim to structure your product in the following ‘chapters’ to cover the themes and theory below from the course: Group Dynamics (with reference to at least Tuckman) Personality and Identity Development (with reference to at least Erikson and Piaget)Social Development (with reference to at least Bronfenbrenner, Erikson and Piaget)

Group Processes
For preparation you were asked to make a visual summary of each stage of the Tuckman model and typical behaviours at each stage. Share your visual with your group and use them to create a collective visual on the Jamboard for your group.
Reading
‘'All that any grown up expects of an adolescent is that he should act like an adult and be satisfied to be treated like a child.'
John Gran

Activity 1
Watch the clip to the right and see if you can identify the characteristics of each stage of Tuckman's group processing model. Why do you think that it is necessary for a teacher to know which stage their group is in? Make notes in your learning journal.

Activity 2
In your group discuss the issues you encounter in each group stage and what activities you can do to address them. Consider things like how to form groups, promote and boost social cohesion, resolve conflict etc. Design concrete activities and record your ideas on the Mural.
MURAL
‘Adolescence isn't a period; its a coma.'

Activity 3
Which stage do you think this group is in? What could you do as a teacher to positively manage this stage? Click Read More for further information on the role of a teacher. Make notes for your Learning Journal. Make sure to include characteristics on group processing and how you can positively influence the stages of Tuckman as a teacher.

‘The most important role models should and could be parents and teachers. But that said, once you're a teenager you've probably gotten as much of an example from your parents as you're going to.’

Assignment Task 1
Provide two examples of different group processes illustrating two different phases from Tuckman’s Group Processing Model. Explain explicitly what behaviour you observe and why you think it relates to the group process. Think of purpose, activities, size, rules, leadership, membership, identification, etc. Next, consider the teacher’s behaviour. How can a teacher positively affect this group process.

Moving Forward LT1
In discussion with your mentor and learners, choose a group of learners that you can follow for a day. This can be a whole class of learners, a group of mentees or a specific social group. Follow the group for the entire day. Use the Group Observation form to note interesting points in terms of group dynamics (including cohesion, norms and Tuckman’s phases). Pay particular attention to the difference in behaviour that the learners present across the various settings.
Don't forget your exit ticket!
