BARBARA McCLINTOCK
Project made by Lucía Rodrigues and Dafne Domínguez.
Who was she?
Barbara Mc Clintock born in Hartfort (USA) the 16 of june of 1902 and died the 3 of september of 1992,when she was 90 years old . She was an American scientist specializing in cytogenetics. When she was young she move to New York withs her uncle. Then she studied in the university of Cornell.
As an independent young woman from an early age, Barbara already knew that science had to be her field of study.Barbara McClinkton began studying at Cornell Agricultural College in 1919. She studied botany, obtaining a Bachelor of Science (BSc) degree in 1923. Her interest in genetics was sparked in 1921 during her first course in that subject.
Field she worked
Contributions she made
As the main focus of his work, McClintock developed techniques to visualise and characterise maize chromosomes. She discovered that genes can change position on chromosomes and this was an important finding for understanding hereditary processes because he used it to explain to explain how genes determine certain physical characteristics.
How did she find out?
She first developed an hypothesis on the regulation of gene expression and the transmission of parental traits of maize plants. Later she dedicated to study the South American corn races. In 1953 she had to stop publishing his results because the people copied his research.
How her discovery changed science?
By the mid-1930s she had already left an indelible mark on the history of genetics, achieving a prestige and recognition that few women of her time could have imagined, the greatest part of her career was yet to come.
For example, in bacteria they are widely studied, among other reasons, because there are complex transposons (transposons that apart from the genes needed to move, have genes with other functions) that give resistance to antibiotics.
What awards did she win ?
She was the first woman to win the Nobel prize in medicine and only one who has recived this recognition along , because before woman didn´t have so many rigts . She recibed the Nobel prize in 1983.
