ABCDE algorithm

Airway

• New-born in neutral position
• Clear airway if needed
• Dry, provide warmth, stimulate
• T°, ECG, SpO2 monitoring (pre-ductal SpO2 on the right hand)

(< 1min)

Apnea or gasping, labored breathing or HR < 100/min

Breathing

• Positive Pressure Ventilation (PPV)

• If PPV uneffective or HR < 100/min => endotracheal intubation

(Evaluation at 30 sec effective PPV)

If HR < 60/min

Circulation

• PPV (↗ FiO2 1.0) + chest compressions (3/1)

(Evaluation at 30-45 sec)

Drugs

• Consider emergency Umbilical Venous Catheter
• IV epinephrine
• Fluid resuscitation with normal saline

(Evaluation every minute) (injections 3 - 5 min)

and don't forget

Environment

• Normothermia
• Normoglycemia
• Communication with parents
