Water Information

An underwater volcano erution in early 2022 put the country of Tonga under a layer of ash. The resulting Tsumani also washed hundreds of tons of debris into resovoirs and what was once clean drinking water. At the time of reporting, upwards of 100,000 people were still without access to clean and safe drinking water.

Tonga's main source of water is from rainwater harvesting, or extracted from freshwater lens in a linestone substrate. The water resources are primarly groundwater as well. To get water where it is needed they will carry it by hand in buckets or bowls. The quality of water it low compared to first world countries due to a lack of ways to properly store it, and a lack of ways to properly treat in when it does get contaminated.
