HEROES
1. PROMOTE WALKING, BIKING AND PUBLIC TRANSPORT
To make our towns and cities more sustainable and environmentally friendly, we need to reduce individual car use and switch to walking, biking and public transport. Cycle lanes and pedestrian zones must be created and extended.
2. REDUCE INEQUALITIES
Public administrations must ensure that people have decent jobs available so that they can get ahead and have equal opportunities, as well as have access to healthcare and education. In addition, they will ensure that we all have the same rights, regardless of our gender, race, sexual orientation or religion.
3. FIGHT GLOBAL WARMING AND CLIMATE CHANGE
We have seen that the effects of climate change and global warming are threatening life as we know it in our countries. Governments must do everything in their power to reduce the emission of polluting gases, especially in industry.
4. IMPROVE AND INCREASE GREEN AREAS
To improve air quality, and therefore our health, it is essential that we have enough green areas in our towns. They are even important for increasing our quality of life and our mental health, providing a place to socialize, exercise and enjoy nature. They must be clean and well maintained, so they must be provided with litter bins and keepers.
5. PROMOTE SUSTAINABLE AGRICULTURE
Intensive and extensive agriculture damages our ecosystems, consuming too much water and affecting soil fertility. In addition, they require a lot of chemicals that end up polluting the environment and harming our health. A balance has to be found between economic interests and sustainability, opting for seasonal crops that are appropriate to the area.
6. PROTECT LIFE UNDER WATER
As we learnt in the Mar Menor, human action can be devastating for the survival of marine ecosystems. Global warming, mass tourism and uncontrolled agriculture can destroy underwater life. It is the duty of governments to protect it by setting limits to human activities.
7. OPTIMIZE WATER CONSUMPTION
It is clear that climate change is leading to an increase in extreme weather events. One of these is drought, which is causing the desertification of large parts of southern Europe. It is vital that we use every drop of water responsibly, both at home and in agriculture and industry.
8. RESPONSIBLE CONSUMPTION AND RECYCLING
The "Reduce, Reuse and Recycle" mantra is essential for sustainable living as it helps to reduce waste, conserve resources and minimize the negative impact on the environment. By reducing our consumption, reusing what we already have and recycling when possible, we can make a positive impact on our planet. Governments and citizens must do their part.
9. SAVE ENERGY AND PROMOTE RENEWABLE ENERGIES
Saving energy is important because it helps to reduce the negative impact of energy consumption on the environment, and it also helps to save money. Both at home and in public buildings we can use energy-efficient light bulbs, turn off the lights and appliances when they are not in use and insulate buildings to avoid energy loss. Moreover, governments must make a firm commitment to renewable energies and make them accessible to the population.
10. RAISE PUBLIC AWARENESS OF SUSTAINABILITY
By raising awareness of sustainability, individuals and communities can be empowered to make informed decisions and take action towards a more sustainable future. Littering, wasting food or using the car when it is not necessary are only a few examples of what we can do better as individuals to ensure a better present and future. This can be done through education, public campaigns and policy initiatives that prioritize sustainability.
