How to Start Animating on Toon Boom Harmony

Using a Bouncing Ball Exercise
Course by Dani Bejarano

Go!

Introduction

Everyone loves animation, yet not many know how it's made. While it has its differences with other kinds of filmmaking, animation proves to be a unique medium that just about anybody can do. You don't even have to know how to draw! That's what I'm here for. This course will cover the fundamentals of animation using a simple exercise, a bouncing ball, all done using Toon Boom Harmony.

What's the difference between digital and traditional animation?

Traditional doesn't use technology.
Digital exclusively uses computers.
Digital only colors traditional frames.
Storyboards are traditional, everything after that is digital.

TRY AGAIN

Around what decade was digital animation first implemented in mainstream films?

The 50s, with Hitchcock's Vertigo (1957)
The 80s, when Pixar was founded.
The 90s, at the start of Disney's Renaissance
The 2000s, when TV started using it

What happened as a result of the popularity of CGI animation in American films?

The market now has a variety of animation styles, 2D and 3D.
CGI animation was just a trend of the 2000s and faded out in favor of 2D.
2D animation faded out of the industry in favor of CGI.
CGI animation is still mostly used for visual effects.

TRY AGAIN

The 12 Principles of Animation only apply to hand-drawn animation.

True, the principles are considered outdated and a relic of the industry.
False, modern animation still references the principles to this day.

TRY AGAIN

What is the end goal of the 12 Principles of Animation?

Be a strict rulebook on animation as a craft.
To make animation as realistic as possible while maintaining artistic vision
To show people how to copy Disney's success.
Be a 12 step program on how to be a better artist.

TRY AGAIN

Toon Boom Harmony is regarded as the industry standard because...

It's the easiest software for new animators to learn
TBA monopolized the entire market, so it's the only one studios use
It has a multitude of tools and applications for different projects
It's the cheapest animation software available for smaller studios

What is the main difference between the brush tool and the pencil tool?

Pencil is used for initial sketches, while brush is used for final drawings
Pencil works in bitmap, brush works in vector

Why is the bouncing ball exercise so important in animation?

Walt Disney always bounced his childhood rubber ball in the studio
It's actually not, you can animate without knowing this exercise
It's a simple action that covers a lot of principles of animation
It's surprisingly complex and a strong indication of your skills

Oops! That was incorrect!

TRY AGAIN

Which of these principles don't directly apply to the exercise?

Spacing
Appeal
Arcs
Squash and Stretch

Oops! That was incorrect!

TRY AGAIN

What is the first step of the exercise?

Deciding the type of ball
Drawing the arcs
Drawing the key frames
Creating a new file

Oops! That was incorrect!

TRY AGAIN

Why do we make the frames two at a time?

So that we have a backup drawing if we mess up
The animation is on 2s, meaning that it will move faster and more fluidly
IDK I was just following directions
It's the default method

Oops! That was incorrect!

TRY AGAIN

What's the final step of the exercise?

Adjusting the timing of the animation
Exporting the animation into a video format
Coloring in the ball
Testing the animation again

Oops! That was incorrect!

TRY AGAIN

Congratulations!

Call it simple, but you've officially made your own animation! Whether or not you could draw, you were able to make your creation come to life and that is the true step into the world of animation.
