Austin
Joe
At 21 years of age I was expected to do a unheatlhy amount of work. Runing away was the best outcome, even if it came with abunch of challlenges to face it was better than spending the rest of my life suffering.
Slave story
All the suffering I experienced every day I worked on the plantation. I decided to run away around midnight in February.
Joe, Austin, and Saline are three possible perspectives of what runaway slaves might have experienced
Saline
Rewards
- Joe $50
- Austin $100
- Saline$25
When I decided to runaway I had to decide to leave my family, and all my children, how I wish I could have taken them with me, but they wouldn't have survived and I know this is for the best.
Family
Jobs
These slaves had to leave their families behind, so they would have a better chance at making it. They all traveled alone, making it easier to stay hidden.
Joe worked in the fields for hours a day. Austin was a carpenter and a barber. Saline was an excellent cook and house maid. All of their jobs were long and their hours of work were around 12 hours a day with little breaks
Journey to freedom
They all ran away in the middle of the night so they would have time in the darkness to get as far away from their masters property as possible and as far north they could. When ever the sun would strart rising they ffound hiding spots for the day, typically they would hid in bushes or in the forsests so hopefully people wouldn't find them. About halfway through their journey they each found a person that helped them by giving them places to hide and safer routes to saftey so they were less likely to get caught.
