The king or queen sits in the coronation chair. The Archbishop of Canterbury takes a spoon filled with holy oil. He uses this to make the sign of a cross on the king or queen’s forehead, hands and heart to show everyone that this person has been blessed by God to be the king or the queen.

The king or queen holds some special objects which are part of a collection called The Crown Jewels.

The Archbishop of Canterbury lifts St Edward’s Crown high above the king or the queen’s head and then places it down.

During his Coronation in 2023, King Charles III receives the sceptre with the cross and the sceptre with the dove.

The crowning

The procession
