What is a SENTENCE?

fragment

sentence

It is an incomplete sentence. It either lacks a subject, a complete verb or it begins with a subordinating word (such as “when” or “because”) so it does not express a complete thought.

A set of words containing a subject and predicate, conveying a statement, question, exclamation, or command. It has a main clause and sometimes one or more subordinate clauses.

When my mother married my father.

Ran to the store faster than a rabbit.

I forgot to eat breakfast. On the morning of my driver’s test.

Loves to lie around in the sun all day.

1 While walking by the house. The mailman noticed a hurt dog. 2. I hang out with my friends from high school whenever I visit my hometown. 3. Many children love to hear stories. Such as fairy tales and fables. 4. I eat a lot of chocolate whenever I am nervous or bored. 5. I need to find a new roommate. Because the one I have now isn't working out too well.

What is a PARAGRAPH?

Brainstorm some ideas of what you know!

A paragraph is a series of sentences that are organized and coherent, and they are all related to a single topic

more on this later...

PUNCTUATION 1

• Remember to start every sentence with a capital letter, and to use a capital letter for place names, days, months, names, etc. We will be in Newcastle with Mrs Hamilton on March the 4th, in Manchester with Dr Kassu on Tuesday the 5th, and Birmingham with Andrea Este on Thursday.

PUNCTUATION 2

When and how to use commas:

  • They come before coordinating conjunctions (for, and, nor, but, or, yet, so)
He walked down the street, and then he turned the corner.
  • Commas separate items in a series, including adjectives
My new boss is hard-working, smart, strict and supportive
  • They follow introductory phrases:
To our surprise, they were brothers.

REGISTER

When you’re writing in a formal register, stick to grammatical rules. For instance, it would not be appropriate to start a sentence with “because” or “and.” Don’t use slang terms in formal writing (e.g. wanna/ gonna); do not swear (F****), and avoid using contractions (e.g. didn't/ isn't, etc.)
