"The Virgin Queen"
Queen Elizabeth I
Elizabeth I was the daughter of Henry VIII and Anne Boleyn, his second wife. She became the queen of England at the age of 25 but, at that time, the England was a divided nation, mostly anti-Catholic and anti-Spanish. She was very clever and determined. Her reign (1558-1603) is considered England's golden age.
The reign of Elizabeth I
During the reign of Elizabeth there was a period of stability. The majority of the church was Anglican, however, she allowed religious tolerance. She inspired the literature, music, drama and poetry. During her reign the english peolpe discoverd the importance of the sea, so England had many victories at sea. In 1559 she consolidated the Reformation by re-introducing the Acts of Supremacy and Uniformity.
Why was she called "VIRGIN QUEEN"?
She was unmarried and she used this as a political weapon. She received many proposal but she regarded marriage as dangerous. She thought that foreign husband would subject England to overseas rules. The Parlament pressed her to marry and produce an heir but she replied: "THE QUEEN IS MARRIED TO HER PEOPLE". For that she was called by her peolpe "the virgin queen".
